Ok, it’s cold out. I’m not a huge fan of the cold… Winter weather always makes us long for a trip way down south to the Florida Keys. So we packed up and decided we needed to enjoy some warmer weather.
Our first stop was Key Largo. We really love fishing, so we booked a charter fishing trip. Although we didn’t catch a huge amount of fish, our family caught quite a few grunts and enjoyed frying those up for a nice dinner.

The boatride was amazing, relaxing, and a great way to see Key Largo from the water. Sailing past the gorgeous homes and boats was a feast for the eyes.

Back at the marina, we enjoyed watching the pelicans swim and scramble for scraps from the fishermen. They definitely knew when it was meal time! So did the nurse shark swimming below the surface… It was also fascinating to watch the biologist take samples from everyone’s catch to determine the population growth and collect data for his reports. Such a great learning experience for the kiddos!

We also met some new friends and enjoyed seeing Mike and his dog Fuzzy. Fuzzy was so sweet and we were so impressed by him! It was so cute to hear him say, “I love you!”
We’ll be sharing that short on our YouTube page soon!
After learning about the fish, we wanted to visit The Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary. According to their website https://www.keepthemflying.org/, “Our sanctuary serves as a humane, natural refuge for over 40 non-releasable birds, representing almost 30 different species. Every bird that is housed on our property passed through our Mission Wild Bird Hospital as a patient and was deemed non-releasable by our permitted Wildlife Rehabilitators and our Volunteer Vet. This means that the birds unfortunately suffered injuries that prevent them from performing their natural behaviors. However, our Sanctuary offers them the chance to live out the remainder of their lives in enclosures filled with natural perching, enriching activities, and appropriate diet.” Although admission is free, a $10 admission donation per person is encouraged.

Did we enjoy seeing and learning about the beautiful birds? Absolutely! Each cage has the story of the bird housed inside, as well as information about the species of bird.

We truly enjoyed walking along the boardwalk and learning about the different types of birds. It was also neat to see the Hermit Crab Preservation Area and to take a walk through the mangroves. Such a peaceful place to explore.

The Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary was a wonderful experience for our family. It was quiet, relaxing, and a great place to learn.
