We decided to wrap up our Utah adventures with a visit to Antelope Island State Park. Located in Syracuse, Utah, it’s pretty close to Salt Lake City, and a really beautiful place to see.

We started our day with a visit to the gift shop/visitor center near the marina. They are doing a lot of work on the park, including renovating and expanding the current visitor center, so the temporary visitor center was our go-to for information.

Joe and I had been to the Great Salt Lake about 20 years ago. We were able to float in it and had an incredible time. We wore our swimsuits on this visit, thinking we could show Luke and Juliana how cool it was, but were rather shocked at how low the water level is now. The rangers we talked to told us the best way to access the water, but cautioned us about being able to float in it due to the low water levels. We walked to the end of Lady Finger Point Trail, past the spiders (which were really cool and not poisonous), and to the edge of the dry lake bed.

We tried to reach the water, we really did. Unfortunately the bugs–we’re talking swarms of gnats and other flying things that did not let our bug spray deter them–did not let up and got worse the further we walked on the lake bed. We were really bummed, but we turned around and hiked back to the car. I’m honestly not sure if it was the time of year we went, but the bugs were just really relentless.

The cool thing about Antelope Island State Park is that it’s not just about the Great Salt Lake. We learned all about the traces that are left of Lake Bonneville. Lake Bonneville was once a glacial lake during the last Ice Age and it covered most of Utah. It was amazing to find out that the lake was over 20,000 square miles and almost 1100 feet deep! You can see where the lake level was on some parts of the countryside in the park.

Guess what else we got to see on Antelope Island! Bison! I’ll bet you thought I was going to say antelope, didn’t you? 😁 The first animals we saw were these majestic creatures roaming without a care in the world. They were incredible. They didn’t seem to mind us observing them from a safe distance.

We really enjoyed driving through the park. We stopped to enjoy the wildflowers, animal & bird watch, and the visit to the Fielding Garr Ranch was informative and a great place to spot mule deer!

We also met a park ranger named Chad who we talked to at length about the park. He had so much information and we were fortunate that he spent some time with us talking about the park. Sending so many thanks for the generous interview he granted us!
