On the road again, we decided to head over to Arches National Park. This is such an amazing and unique place to visit. Joe and I went there years ago, and we thought Luke and Juliana would love it, too.

We started at the visitors center to get a preview on what we might like to see and learn about. Juliana and I got our Junior Ranger books and a map, then we planned our day. When we go to national parks, we map out the destinations we most want to explore, then drive through the park to our chosen places. Many times we see things along the way that we didn’t have on our agenda, but we like to stop and enjoy those when time allows.

It was pretty toasty the day we went, so we made sure to pack a lot of water to stay hydrated. With the amount of hiking we wanted to do, we knew we’d need it.

According to nps.gov, “Arches National Park has the densest concentration of natural stone arches in the world. There are over 2,000 documented arches in the park, ranging from sliver-thin cracks to spans greater than 300 feet.” That’s a lot of arches to see!

We drove through an amazing area filled with absolutely gorgeous scenery everywhere we looked.

We stopped at Park Avenue Trail and were astounded. The rock wall formations were tall, imposing, and red. Very, very red. We took a bit of a hike (not the full 1.8 miles) and really enjoyed looking at the different formations. We felt very small compared to the towering heads above us. If you’re an Indiana Jones fan (which we are 🤩) some of the opening scenes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed at Park Avenue Trail.

The drive to our next stop was even more incredible! We pulled off the road to snap some pics of these amazing formations!

Then we drove to and walked the Balanced Rock Trail. It was an easy walk around Balanced Rock. It was really neat to see it from different angles.

Hiking a half mile to Double Arch was one of our favorite parts of the day! We saw amazing formations that looked like animals, the lips from the Rolling Stones’ Hot Lips logo, and the iconic Double Arch. We met some amazing people along the way, including Brad Mozisek. Brad is an artist and we enjoyed meeting him and his family. One of our favorite things about it was seeing another place that the opening scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed! So cool!

We then ventured to the Windows Section of the park. We took the trails that led to some breathtaking views. The North Window was amazing! You can walk right up to the arches and enjoy a break in one of the most beautiful areas we’ve seen. There are rocks to sit on and you can relax while looking out over the park.

After we took a break at the North Window, we took a walk to Turret Arch. It looks so small when you look at it from North Window, but when you get to it, you realize it’s huge! We really loved exploring this area, and it was less crowded than Double Arch and North Window.

On our way out of the Windows Section, we stopped at the Garden of Eden. This was a neat area and we liked to use our imaginations to describe some of the different rocks.

Here is the view from the Lower Delicate Arch viewpoint. At this point we were too tired and hot to take the 3 mile hike to get any closer. It was a beautiful area, but the heat of the day was catching up to us, so we opted to view it from afar.

We really had a great time at Arches National Park. It’s one of the most amazing places that gave us the opportunity to learn about geological formations, erosion, weather, dynamic landforms, and some really fun movie history!
