We continued our Colorado exploration with a drive to the Colorado National Monument. It was a gorgeous drive, but there are areas with very limited to absolutely no internet signal.

While this normally doesn’t pose a problem for us, this time it did. You see, we couldn’t find the visitor center and the map we had downloaded prior to heading out wasn’t what you would call accurate. With no way to find our way in the right direction, we had a limited view of the park. Was it still beautiful? Absolutely! Did we still have fun? You betcha!

The Colorado National Monument isn’t just a stone monument, it’s actually an unspoiled landscape which looks the same now as it did in the pioneer days. Located approximately 15 miles from Grand Junction, Colorado, this national park contains over 20,500 acres!

Upon entering the Colorado National Monument, the twisting roads provide gorgeous views of magnificent rock formations and steep canyons. The different colored rocks layering the canyons were astounding.

While on Rimrock Drive, we stopped at the Cold Shivers Point overlook. We were so glad that we did! Cold Shivers might get cold during the year, but when we were there it was over 100 degrees! 🔥 Even with the heat, we enjoyed learning about the geography and erosion that formed the canyon.

Our next stop was the Ute Canyon overlook. It was really cool and the red path made it feel like we were walking on Mars! We are doing poetry lessons this week for homeschool, and this is a short one I wrote about it:
There were some trees
that were twisted and gnarled,
left with bent branches
not broken, just scarred.

Fallen Rock overlook was also amazing! Looking at the massive piece of Wingate Sandstone that slid down the side of the canyon was so cool! We really enjoyed walking around and looking for animals. The view of the Fallen Rock was amazing! All of us thought the views were beautiful. It was really peaceful and quiet.

There was so much that we didn’t see, but we thoroughly loved the drive along Rimrock Drive.
