Sometimes the smallest journey brings the most joy, and so does the smallest waterfall. 💖 While we were in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we took a short trip to Scott Falls and Scott Falls Roadside Park.
Located near Au Train on M-28, is the neatest little waterfall. It’s not a long hike from the road, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Scott Falls only drops about 10 ft. from a sandstone cliff, and there are much taller waterfalls. When we visited, there hadn’t been very much rain for a while, so the water was much slower than normal. So what makes this waterfall so special?

My family loves it because it’s in this neat little cove-like area that feels secluded even though it’s right next to the highway. The kids love walking behind the falls in a little cave area, too. The Ojibwa communities used to use the area for resources before the European settlers, so it also provided an opportunity for a history lesson.

Playing in Scott Falls:
Across the road at the Scott Falls Roadside Park, is a beautiful white sand beach. We walked along the coast of Lake Superior and soaked our feet in the cool and clear water.

The last time we were there, we had found the Face in the Rock, so we had to look for it again! It was carved in 1820 and is of the “Powers of the Air.” The Face in the Rock was made as a tribute to an Ojibwa hero.

While we did find it, it seemed like erosion had made the face just a bit harder to find. That did not take away from the beauty of the carving, though!

While climbing the large boulders, we met a very nice local. She told us she had never seen the face. We happily showed her where it was and she was as excited about finding it as we were.

After some more beach therapy, we decided to head out for some pasties. We had already tried one of the pasty restaurants in Munising, but it honestly wasn’t our favorite. So I was all up for finding a new pasty place. A super friendly local had told us about his favorite pasty in the area. It was very close to us, so we went to check them out. We drove over to Au Train Grocery and were surprised to see quite a few people leaving the store with pasties. It seemed like the locals knew what they were talking about! We really enjoyed them!

After we finished our delicious dinner we went back to the hotel to get rested up for our next adventure. Our journeys will be taking us in a very different direction in the next edition, so stay tuned!
